FRESNO, CA (April 12, 2007) -Barrier Specialty Roofing & Coatings Inc. of Fresno, Calif., recently earned a National Industry Excellence Award from the Spray Polyurethane Alliance for its outstanding work on the roof of a historic helicopter hangar in San Diego, Calif.

The award, one of the most prestigious in the roofing industry, was presented recently at an annual roofing industry trade show in Orlando, Fla. The award recognized “superior job performance” in the category of insulated roofing application for a project of more than 10,000 square feet.

Barrier Specialty Roofing & Coatings was awarded the honor after an intensive review of the project by a panel made up of academics and building professionals from the polyurethane roofing industry.

But that’s actually the end of the story. It all began when Barrier’s Chief Executive Officer Blair Cunnings earned the bid for the roofing project, which was part of a $40 million renovation of the helicopter hangars at Naval Air Station, North Island in San Diego, a site listed on the National Federal Register of Historic Places. The construction company handling the renovation hired Cunnings’ company to apply a seamless, tough roofing system to two 67-year-old concrete hangars.

Instantly, Cunnings noted two things that would make the job a challenge: working on a historic site, and attempting to match the original black hue of the roof. “Nobody likes to install a black roof. Black tends to heat the surface and impact the roofing system,” Cunnings said. Another consideration – protecting the roof from San Diego’s seagull population. The top coat on the project had to be peck-proof to protect it from the thousands of birds which come to roost on the roof.

But those issues were just the beginning of the list of items Cunnings had to address at the project. He had to find a way to safely and effectively get his eight applicators on the steeply arched roofs to work. He also had to ensure that the helicopters and crowded parking lots nearby were not victims of overspray – all this while battling the ocean breeze and swirling winds on the rooftops.

As winning the award of excellence shows, Barrier Specialty Roofing & Coatings  met and conquered these challenges, satisfied the general contractor and the Navy, and impressed the experts in the coatings industry.

In addition to taking on large-scale, innovative roofing projects like the one described, Barrier Specialty Roofing & Coatings provides state-of-the-art sprayed roofing and coating systems for commercial, industrial and residential structures of many types. The company’s technicians have applied over 8 million square feet of roofing and coating products to projects throughout the state. These products include polyurethane foam, metal roof coatings, acrylic restoration coatings, cold storage coatings and tank insulation products. After determining which product is appropriate, Barrier uses experienced, trained technicians to apply the roofing or coating materials.

In addition to providing peace of mind, Cunnings said the products he applies offer commercial property owners long-term protection of their structures; prevent leaks, rust and insulation problems; help deter corrosion and roof shifting; and increase the beauty, durability and safety of the workplace. Property owners will also reap financial benefits in that Barrier’s coatings often decrease energy costs by as much as 50 percent.

Cunnings is no new-comer to the specialty coatings industry. He has more than a decade of experience as CEO of Barrier, is a fourth-generation coatings expert in the Central Valley.

Barrier is proud to have worked with a wide range of businesses statewide including Benzinger Family Winery, Fresno Unified School District, Children’s Hospital Central California, Wawona Frozen Foods, Costco Wholesale, P.G &E., Save Mart, Span Construction and Xerox.
